    When the United States invaded Mexico in the war of 1847, its troops laid seige to the military academy in Chapultepec castle, then on the outskirts of Mexico City. Despite an order to flee to their homes, the military cadets refused to leave, and six who died in the fighting are commemorated as the Niños Héroes. The youngest was aged just 13 and none was older than 20. Despite some doubts which have been raised about the more colourful aspects of the legend (e.g. wrapping themselves in the national flag and leaping to their deaths from the battlements), they remain among the most honoured figures in Mexico's pantheon of national heroes. When US president Harry Truman placed a wreath at their monument on a visit to Mexico in 1947, the gesture went down very well, so much so that President Clinton repeated it in 1997.

    Apaigüestias, son apariciones, alucinaciones, esta palabra encierra un sugestivo campo de creencias en fantasmas, o ánimas condenadas y también encierra las creencias mitológicas, con todas sus historias y leyendas descabelladas o quizás ciertas, pues este mundo nuestro no se hizo de la Nada, y desde el más sabio de los humanos hasta el más ignorante, llevamos muy dentro de nuestra alma o espíritu, una lejana o cercana creencia en algo que existe «Sobrenatural», que tras la muerte nos ha de premiar o castigar, con firme exactitud en todas nuestras obras buenas y malas que hemos hecho. Ahora les contaré una historia, o leyenda, que sucedió en una de mis aldeas hace ya muchos, muchísimos años, y que yo he escuchado cuando era pequeño, de lengua de una tía abuela mía, que en aquel acaecer con más de cien años de existencia encima de su cuerpo, aún tenía arreos para trabajar en sus tierras como cualquier persona que bien lo hiciere. «MARÍA LA XANTINA» Casárase María la hija del tío Jacinto, muchacha pequeña de estatura, pero grande de hermosura y de exquisitos sentimientos, con Amalio el del Aldexuxán (Aldea de Susana), joven que no tenía de bueno nada más que el ser un mozarrón como un carbayu (roble) y ser su padre el más rico y poderoso vaqueiru de todos aquellos contornos. Tal caxoriu (casorio) fue amañucáu (preparado), por Rexina la Porricona (Regina la Desnuda), que recibiera del padre del novio por haber hecho tal arreglo, un xaretal d'ablanus (pequeño prado muy cuesto plantado de avellanos). Diremos para comprender mejor esta historia, que la Porricona, era una mujer que gozaba de grande fama en toda aquella rica comarca, porque era la esposa de Lláurianu 'l Llóndrigu (Laureano la Nutria), porque era éste un hábil cazador de estos finos animales de ricas pieles, que de aquella infestaban los regueirus (torrentes) de todas las montañas y el río que cruzaba el fértil valle. También era el Llóndrigu un experto en curar todos los males que tuviesen las personas y animales, por tal razón aquel matrimonio, al decir de muchos vecinos, era una verdadera bendición del mismo cielo, cosa que aprovechaba la Porricona, p'esquicionar al sou antoxu nus tibeirus quei dexaben fatáus de bétchaes ganancies. (Para hacer cuanto se le antojase con sus arreglos, negocios, líos, etc., que le dejaban siempre muchas y ricas ganancias). La aldea de Aldexuxán estaba compuesta por poco más de una docena de vecinos, que todos ellos eran familiares entre si. No voy a detenerme a narrar los diferentes pormenores de la historia como me fueron contados a mí, simplemente me ceñiré a un hecho concreto, relacionado con la mitología o apaigüestias fantasmales o milagrosas, ancestrales creencias, de las melgueras gentes de mi embrujadora Tierrina. Sobre la aldea de Aldexuxán había pesado desde siempre un fatídico malificio, haciendo que sus gentes siendo las más ricas de la fértil comarca, no fuesen tan felices como todos los demás eran, porque jamás en toda su historia había nacido una mujer en ella. Las mujeres que se casaban con los hombres de la aldea de Aldexuxán, se condenaban a no poder tener jamás una hija, y por todo lo contrario, alumbraban varones fuertes y sanos, que se convertían cuando llegaban a la mocedad, en los mozos más esbeltos y fornidos de toda la comarca. Pero a pesar de ser tan buenos mozos, y todos ellos vaqueirus ricos, gozaban de muy escasas simpatías entre las mozas casaderas, por tal razón, muchos no lograban casarse, y cuando alguno lo hacía, casi siempre mediaba un «arreglo» de por medio. —Así, el padre de Amalio se puso al habla con la Porricona, para que arreglase la boda de su hijo con Mariela, muchacha virginal y encantadora, de la que estaba enamorado ciegamente su hijo. Prometiéndole a la Porricona si lo conseguía, que él le daría como favor, el xaretal de Riuscuru, (pradín de Río Oscuro), que lindaba con otra finca que ella tenía. Cuando Mariela supo por sus padres, que estaba destinada para ser la mujer de Amalio el de Aldexuxan, una grande tristeza se adueñó de su alma, que le robó su alegría, y las francas y felices sonrisas que en todo instante su espíritu alumbraba. Y así de apenada todos los días se le veía por su aldea, con sus hermosos ojos siempre enrojecidos por la quemante caricia de sus lágrimas, sin encontrar el consuelo que le devolviese aquella felicidad que antes gozara. Gran devota de la Virgen de la aldea habla sido siempre Mariela, con la que con una fe desmedida siempre oracionaba y hablaba, y así de esta manera, entre profundos y dolorosos suspiros, y lágrimas torrenciales que manaban de su desespero, el día antes de su boda, con la Santina de su aldea así dialogaba: —Virxencina melgueira, qu'achorandu 'l tou cháu venu, ameruxá d'un dollor que m'esfáe pel tristeyáu miou alma, mamplená d'un miéu que d'afechu, encuandiona toa l'allegría qu'endenantes en miou espíritu per uquier afroriaba. Ya tal couxa fairéla, Xantiquina 'l miou alma, se deximesme agora, ya me dexes solina, nel atayu miou pena, qu'en llocura m'entrema. (Santiquina de mi alma, que todos los males si tu quieres arreglas, no me hagas sufrir, pues no quiero casarme sin amor y por fuerza, yo no quiero ese mozo que de bueno no peca, y antes de ir junto de él a la iglesia, más quisiera morirme, ahorcada con una cuerda, que me anude mi cuello, y me haga en ser muerta. Y tal cosa he de hacer, Santiquina mi alma, si me olvidas ahora, y me dejas muy sola, en el atajo de mi pena, que a la locura me lleva). Algo muy hermoso le contestaría la Virgen a Mariela, porque otra vez se le volvió a ver llena de sana y feliz alegría, quizás con más fuerza que jamás tuviera. Y así de contenta, cariñosa y feliz, ante la misma Santina que su pena esfixera (deshiciera), al siguiente día en la iglesia se casaba con el vaqueiru Amalio. El día de su boda, fue un domingo del mes de mayo, bañado por la luz del sol que todo lo alumbraba y lo erradiaba de vida, y como era domingo, era fiesta en la aldea, el jilguero cantaba y el malvís silbiotaba y las gentes humildes con paxiétchus de festa (trajes de fiesta), a la boda acudían de la dulce Mariela, la más hermosa moza que la aldea tenía. La que viétchus ya xóvenes (viejos y jóvenes), grande y puro cariño hacia ella sentían. Cuando todos estaban fundidos en sus rezos y el buen cura casaba a la virgen Mariela, se escuchó como un trueno, muy cercano y enorme, muy profundo y tenebroso, que hizo palidecer de miedo a muchas gentes del festejo. ¡Un castigo del cielo, murmuraban las viejas, ha de mandarnos Dios, por casar a esta santa, con un fíu (hijo) de la aldea en poder del demonio! Aquel confuso ruido que a las gentes atemorizara, por ser dadas a irse a los Lares Divinos, no era tal trueno que en el aire quedara sin dejar un vestigio, pues había sido un castigo, y todos sobrecogidos pensaron, que el Hacedor andaba en aquel cataclismo. Tal pelea fue originada por los desmedidos insultos despreciativos dirigidos a los mozos de Aldexuxan, por los de la aldea de Mariela, asegurándoles que no llevarían a la santina Mariela a vivir con ellos a su aldea maldita, donde jamás había nacido ni una sola mujer, por la causa de ser todos hijos del mismo diablo. La cariñosa bondad, y la fértil felicidad y alegría que en todo momento emanaba torrencialmente de la encantadora Mariela, muy pronto cautivó y contagió a todas las gentes del Aldexuxan, pequenos y grandes, con tal frenesí llegaron a quererla, a adorarla y mimarla, lo mismo que si se tratara de un ser sobrenatural, que había llegado a la aldea para alegrarles a todos sus vidas. Durante el tiempo de su preñez, era Mariela atendida en todo momento por las mujeres de la aldea, y los hombres y los niños, estaban más pendientes de ella, que de sus trabajos y sus juegos, siempre le traían del campo flores y variedad de frutos, y todos al mirarse en sus encantadores ojos, la felicidad y el gozo en sus espíritus advertían. Era Mariela para todos, algo que ni tan siquiera habían soñado que existiera. Al Aldexuxan habían llegado de sus aldeas todas las mujeres que la cuidaban y mimaban y ninguna de ellas jamás había sido feliz ni encontrado la alegría en su espíritu en aquel lugar al que muy pocas de ellas habían llegado por su propia voluntad. Sin embargo al mirarse en los resplandecientes ojos de Mariela, al sentir el hado misterioso que en todo instante rezumía de su ser, llegaba a sus entrañas por primera vez raudales de gozo y alegría, que las llenaba de felicidad, y de una dicha embriagadora y sublime. Como todo en la vida tiene su tiempo de espera, y todo cuanto se espera si atañe a los procesos naturales llega, así vino el momento del alumbramiento de Mariela. Fue una mañana de los principios de la primavera, cuando todos los árboles y las plantas despertaban jubilosos y en silencio a la floreciente vida donde comenzaban, los malvises y jilgueros volvían a cantar alegres y bulliciosos, tras la mudez que les infligiera el frío y nevado invierno, fue aquella luminosa y primaveral mañana cuando todas las gentes de la aldea, se reunían contentas y felices a la par que en sus interiores algo preocupadas y temerosas, como si presintieran que algo irremediable le habría de ocurrir a la santina Mariela. Digo que todos reunidos en la casa de Mariela, anhelantes esperaban tan natural y querido acontecer. Algunas mujeres llenas de firmes creencias, rezaban sin descanso, pidiéndole al Faidor (Hacedor) y a sus santos más allegados, que la feliz nueva se alumbrara por los cauces naturales, y que Mariela no cosechara arduos sufrimientos. Otras más mañosas en tales menesteres, parteaban ilusionadas y eficientes, en cuantos cometidos quce en tal proceso se requieren. Al fin, de las entrañas de la parturienta, brotó la vida, y todas las gentes al presenciar aquella recién nacida criatura, doblaron sus rodillas en el suelo, y una oración de gracia en el cielo pusieron, dentro de la gran dicha y alegría que jamás sintieron. Porque por primera vez en toda la historia de la aldea del Aldexuxan, había nacido una niña, una hermosa niña que rompía con su divino milagro, el maléfico castigo que les había acompañado siempre. Tal milagroso acontecer, alborozó a los vecinos del Aldexuxan en tal altura, que por unos instantes se olvidaron de la moribunda Mariela, y cuando al fin Isabela enloquecida por la alegría que le hacía caminar por el incansable sendero de la dicha, digo que Isabela se dirigió respetuosa y venerativamente hacia Mariela, y besándola con gran cariño en su frente radiante de felicidad le decía, que el maleficio que pesaba sobre las gentes de la aldea, de no haber tenido jamás una mujer, una niña, ella porque era una santina, lo había roto al alumbrar aquella preciosa criatura, que era para todos los seres del Aldexuxan el fin del conxuru (conjuro) que desde siempre sobre todos pesaba. La moribunda Mariela, con su sonrisa encantadora siempre pendiente de sus labios, y una luz misteriosa y hechicera que en todo momento de sus bellos ojos se desprendía, les hizo comprender a los allí reunidos, que eran todas las gentes del Aldexuxan, que era Mariela algo que pertenecía a la divinidad de lo desconocido, y que no podría morar entre ellos, nada más que con su espíritu. Así silenciosamente Mariela, a todos miraba cariñosamente y todos se sentían bajo su embrujante y acariciante mirada, protegidos de cuantos males en la Tierra hubiese, y navegantes en una dicha que ni en sueños la esperaban. No os ruego nada más, en estos postreros respirares de mi vida, que no busquéis casorios preparados para vuestros hijos, dejazlos que ellos busquen y cuiden sus amores en el lugar que su querer mejor los halague. Pues no es nada bueno, amarrar la juventud, a la codicia antojadiza que hacen sus padres. Pues muy felices y ricas son las gentes pobres, que comiendo un mendrugo de pan duro, o una torta cocida encima del lar, son dichosos y felices hasta que de viejos se mueren. Y muy pobres y desgraciadas son las otras gentes, que poseen todo cuanto necesitan, e infelices son, al no poder disfrutarlo, con la paz del amor y la buena compañía). Así fue como se despidió la melguera Mariela, antes de entregar su sublime alma, al Infinito poder de la Divinidad invisible, dejando a su cuerpo muerto llorado con gran pena, por aquellas sencillas, naturales y nobles gentes de la aldea del Aldexuxan, que harían de ella al correr del tiempo, la Santina Mariela. Yo no puedo afirmar si esta narración es una historia, una leyenda o quizás un mito, sólo se decir, que mi tía abuela aseguraba cuando me la contó, que era tan cierto como que ella se tenía que murrer (morir). También recuerdo cuando yo era un guaxiquín (muy pequeño), haber escuchado decir a las más viejas de estas aldeas, aconxexandu (aconsejando) a las mujeres que teniendo varios hijos varones, ellas querían tener una niña y no lograban alcanzar tal deseo. Digo que las ancianas les aconsejaban así: —Lo que tenéis que hacer si queréis tener una niña, es rezarle todos los días con buena fe a la Santina Mariela, ya veréis como el primer hijo que tengáis sin ninguna duda ha de ser una hermosa niña.
